The Great Carnival of Dakar
The Grand Carnival of Dakar is an annual event held on the last weekend of November, which coincides with the high tourist season. The event contributes to the promotion and preservation of cultural heritage. This year, the big carnival pays tribute to the Lions of Senegal victorious at CAN-2022 and to sport in general, hence the choice of the theme “sport and culture”.
Culture and sport convey extremely positive collective values: sharing, excellence, self-sacrifice, openness. The Grand Carnival will be a perfect opportunity to explore a part of the cultural and sporting history of Senegal and show the anchoring of culture in the practice of sport, like the wrestlers who dance the baaku with their traditional outfits just before a fight. Or the Assiko, these orchestras with typical instruments that accompany the Naveta football teams with their festive rhythms.
