The hawk has landed! Firefighters rescue entangled bird of prey
Firefighters and naturalists rushed to rescue a Harris’s hawk which got itself entangled in a tree in the southwestern Polish city of Bielsko-Biała.
The bird, which had a rope attached to its legs, found itself snagged on a branch, prompting local residents to alert the fire department for assistance.
Upon arrival, firefighters collaborated with naturalists from the local animal rescue center, Mysikrólik, to safely free the hawk. According to a naturalist from the center, the young bird likely became lost while searching for its owner. “This young individual probably scouted out its keeper and wandered around the neighborhood,” the naturalist explained. Unfortunately, the rope—approximately two meters long—attached to the bird’s legs caught on a tree branch, leaving it unable to escape.
After being rescued, the hawk was found to be slightly emaciated, indicating it had been struggling to find food. It was promptly examined by a veterinarian to assess its health. The naturalists at Mysikrólik stated that the hawk would spend the next few days at the center, where it would receive care and monitoring. They expressed hope that the bird’s guardian would come forward to document its legal origin, as many Harris’s hawks in Europe are kept as pets or trained for falconry.
Harris’s hawks, formerly known as bay-winged hawks, are large birds of prey native to regions in the southwestern United States, Chile, central Argentina, and Brazil. They are known for their social behavior, often hunting in groups, which is relatively uncommon among raptors. A significant number of these hawks have been brought to Europe, particularly the UK, for falconry purposes, where they are trained for hunting.
The Mysikrólik center in Bielsko-Biała plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of sick or injured wild animals. As one of the few facilities in Poland dedicated to this cause, it provides essential care and support for wildlife in distress. The successful rescue of the Harris’s hawk highlights the importance of community awareness and the collaborative efforts of local authorities and wildlife organizations in protecting and rehabilitating wildlife.
This incident not only underscores the challenges faced by birds of prey in urban environments but also serves as a reminder of the responsibility humans have in ensuring the safety and well-being of wildlife. The hope is that the hawk will recover fully and, if possible, be reunited with its owner.
