The Philippine Women’s Football Team Is Heading To World Cup
The Philippine women's national football team is making preparations for the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in July. After their disappointing performance in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia, the team is determined to surprise the global audience with their skills.
In Group A, the Philippines has been placed alongside formidable teams such as co-host nation New Zealand (ranked No. 25 by FIFA), Norway (No. 12), and Switzerland (No. 25). However, due to scheduling conflicts and club commitments, the team won't be able to organize any friendly matches in their home country.
"We're aiming to bring the entire team together by mid-June. We are considering a training camp in Australia or a location near New Zealand to help the players acclimatize and prepare for the World Cup," stated Jeff Chang, the team manager. He made this announcement while unveiling the Filipinas' game kits, which were inspired by the Philippine flag, on May 16 at the BGC amphitheater.
Despite their early exit in the Southeast Asian Games, the team's captain, Hali Long, remains optimistic about their historic maiden World Cup appearance. She emphasized the team's goal of constantly improving their performance, drawing inspiration from their victory against Vietnam, the eventual champions, where Long scored the final goal in a 3-1 win.
"After losing to Myanmar and defeating Vietnam, our focus has always been on surpassing our previous performances. We will continue this approach not only during the World Cup but also beyond that. We have the Asian Games Round Two ahead of us," expressed Long.
"We need to keep elevating our game. The World Cup is undoubtedly the pinnacle of our year, but it won't be the end for the Filipinas," she added.
Although the Philippines missed out on a medal in the Southeast Asian Games due to an inferior goal differential in the group stage, the team remains confident and sets their sights on achieving better results in the latter half of their busy year.
"The team's confidence is still intact. Sometimes, the outcome of the game comes down to a matter of luck, but we will strive for further improvement and consistency," Chang reassured.
