There is a “World of Adventures†to live in à‰vora
The Évora Art and Culture Center (CAC) of the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation (FEA) opens, on July 9, its new exhibition “Mundo de Aventuras”, by João Fonte Santa.
Curated by José Alberto Ferreira, the exhibition aims to be an invitation “ to question and reinterpret images and narratives that dictated the identity of the Portuguese nation”, announces the FEA, in a statement sent to Renascença .
The exhibition, which “results from the questioning and deconstruction of national histories and mythologies by the artist”, is based on three sections.

The first section, according to FEA, “explores the national identity, between the cradle of the Nation and A Portuguesa ”, while the second section “addresses images published in the report of Portuguese explorers Hermenegildo Capelo and Roberto Ivens, 'De Angola à contracosta' ”.
The canvases that open the exhibition precisely represent images from this book, originally published in 1886.
“Evoking the adventurous reading of this Description of a journey through the African continent comprising diverse narratives, adventures and important discoveries, the fauna and flora are analyzed, photographed and reproduced illustrating each step of the continental crossing”, underlines the statement.
As for the third section, based on an anonymous Portuguese comic book, dating from 1977, “it returns to explore the African fauna, with canvases of strong colors and precise lines, like a wild paradise tamed by the weapons and hunting of human explorers”.
“Mundo de Aventuras”, according to the promoters, “challenges to dive into the 31 drawings of the series”, putting “Portuguese identity and history in perspective, through the reanalysis of images and narratives”.

João Fonte Santa is from Évora and one of the most representative artists of his generation.
His work addresses the “incessant multiplication of image-producing instances, their circulation in mass culture and the ideological readability of these processes”, says the artist's curriculum.
Fonte Santa habitually appropriates images, from comics to newspapers, from painting to photography, from popular iconography to cinema, “from which he interrogates senses, affiliations, sensibilities and identities”. Read More…
