This summer's PNE concert lineup leans on nostalgia and local talent
This summer, the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) concert stage will welcome back some familiar and beloved performers. TLC, who graced the stage last summer as part of the series, will once again captivate the audience on the opening weekend, specifically on August 19. Following this, the renowned R&B trio Boyz II Men will take the stage the next night.
Transporting concert-goers back to the nostalgic 1970s, the sensational Boney M, accompanied by special guest Maizie Williams, will deliver a memorable performance on August 23. Additionally, the PNE stage will witness the return of the iconic Billy Idol, who took the 1980s by storm, on August 27. Moreover, the crowd can anticipate the electrifying performances of Aqua and Pink Martini, both beloved acts from the 1990s.
Laura Ballance, the spokesperson for PNE, revealed that the decision to bring back some artists was influenced by the high demand witnessed in previous years. She explained, "In recent years, we had Billy Idol, and many people were left disappointed when they were unable to secure a ticket. Therefore, we decided to bring him back to appease his enthusiastic fanbase."
In addition to the returning favorites, TLC will grace the PNE stage once again this summer, following their appearance last year. Furthermore, the lineup will feature local talents such as rapper bbno$ and his collaborator Yung Gravy. Jason Derulo, renowned for his popular pop hits like "Savage Love," "Whatcha Say," and "Ridin' Solo," will also grace the stage with his extraordinary performance.
Several other remarkable Canadian acts are set to enchant the audience, including Billy Talent, Tenille Townes, Walk off the Earth, and Doug and the Slugs, who will present a special show in collaboration with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. To conclude the series, Blue Rodeo will deliver an unforgettable performance on September 4.
Ballance emphasized the significance of showcasing local talent at the PNE fair, stating, "The PNE's roots lie in presenting the wealth of local talent across various aspects of the fair."
Adding to the excitement, the schedule includes a special Stars of Drag show hosted by Crystal Methyd, a beloved personality from Ru Paul's Drag Race. This extraordinary event will feature appearances by fellow Drag Race alumni Alyssa Edwards and Raja.
