Thomas Muster identifies one reason behind Dominic Thiem's downfall
Thomas Muster, a notable tennis figure from Austria, opines that several dire choices resulted in the downfall of Dominic Thiem's career. However, Muster acknowledges that the 2020 US Open winner still has the opportunity to regain his footing. Thiem, after achieving Grand Slam victory, began to falter in form and performance. The year 2021 brought upon him a wrist injury that forced him to abstain from play for a duration of 10 months. Upon returning to the sport in March 2022, Thiem's skill level had diminished, which reflects in his current world rank of 93. As Muster puts it, "Dominic has maneuvered himself into a dead end. Sometimes catastrophic decisions have been made. At some point, he asked himself the question, what he wants: stop or keep playing?"
Thus far, in 2023, Thiem has amassed 7 triumphs and 12 losses at the primary level. In the timespan between February and April, Thiem endured a five-game losing streak. It is apparent that Thiem is no longer at the top of his game. However, Muster believes that the 29-year-old has the potential to reclaim his spot in the top 30 rankings. "Dominic can certainly defeat one or the other top-tier player in Paris. A quarter-final or round of 16 is plausible. Personally, I believe a spot in the top 30 is achievable this year," Muster added.
During the Madrid Masters, Thiem demonstrated some hopeful performances. He soundly defeated Kyle Edmund before nearly dethroning Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek player managed to barely edge out the Austrian in a three-set match, winning 3-6 6-1 7-6 (5). Tsitsipas expressed his satisfaction with the match's intensity and quality, saying, "It was very physical and I think we both played our best. I'm in a way happy that we were able to show that kind of tennis. Today sort of showed what kind of intensity two guys that play single-hand backhands can bring to tennis. I'm happy I got away with a win. Things weren't easy at the very end but I just kept fighting."
