Traditional Croatian Pasta Dish Makes World’s Top 20
World of Statistics has unveiled a list of the most popular pasta dishes in the world, and Croatia proudly features on this prestigious list. While the top spots are predictably dominated by Italy, Croatia's unique contribution has earned it a place among the best.
The list is led by classic Italian dishes, with Linguine pasta with seafood taking the number one spot. Following closely are Pappardelle with wild boar in second place, Carbonara in third, and Tagliatelle with Bolognese sauce in fourth. The only other country to break the Italian dominance is Greece, with its dish Giouvetsi ranking seventh.
Croatia secured the 20th position on the list with šurlice with shrimp, a traditional delicacy from the island of Krk. Šurlice, named for their resemblance to an elephant’s trunk, are the most famous variety of pasta on Krk.
Made with just a few simple ingredients and crafted using time-honored techniques, šurlice offer an authentic taste of Krk’s culinary heritage. They are similar to the Istrian pasta known as fuži, but are thinner and more elongated. Typically, šurlice are served with rich meat or seafood sauces, making them a versatile dish that highlights the flavors of the region.
The tradition of preparing šurlice continues in Dobrinj, a charming town in Krk’s interior, where it remains a staple of local cuisine. The preservation of this culinary tradition reflects the island's rich gastronomic culture and commitment to authentic flavors.
The inclusion of šurlice with shrimp in the top 20 pasta dishes worldwide is a testament to Croatia's culinary heritage and the unique flavors it brings to the global table. As pasta lovers around the world explore diverse dishes, Croatia's traditional offerings continue to gain recognition, showcasing the island of Krk as a destination for authentic culinary experiences.
