Travel Chaos in Belgium as Nine Days of National Train Strikes Begin
Belgium is facing travel disruption as a nationwide train strike kicks off, lasting from 10 PM on February 21 until 10 PM on March 2. Travelers are advised to reconsider their travel plans, as the strike is expected to severely impact train services across the country.
The Belgian National Railway Company (SNCB) has warned that most of its personnel, along with those working for rail infrastructure companies Infrabel and HR-Rail, will be participating in the strike. This means that the rail network could be brought to a near standstill, with very few trains operating during this period.
In addition to the train strike, airport workers are set to continue their strikes on the 13th of every month until further notice, further complicating travel plans. Major cities such as Brussels, Antwerp, and Bruges will experience disruptions not only in train services but also in other public transport options, including buses, trams, and metro services.
SNCB has acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the strike, stating, “We understand and regret that this strike may interfere with your travels.” They have indicated that an alternative service will be implemented based on staff availability, but travelers should expect limited options.
As the situation develops, it is likely that further strikes and mass protests could extend into the spring, adding to the uncertainty for those planning to travel in Belgium. Travelers are encouraged to stay informed about the latest updates and consider alternative modes of transportation during this challenging period.
