Tree Planting of 25million trees in the works to raise Lahore’s tree cover to 7%
The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) of Lahore is undertaking a significant initiative to increase the city's tree cover to 7% by planting over 25 million trees this year.
This effort comes in response to Lahore's rapidly declining green spaces, which currently account for less than 1% of the city due to extensive urbanization.
PHA Director General Muhammad Tahir Wattoo emphasized the importance of this ambitious tree-planting drive as a means to combat climate change, reduce CO2 levels, and mitigate rising summer temperatures in the city.
The initiative marks a substantial increase from the 1.5 million trees planted last year, focusing on under-greened neighborhoods.
The PHA has also engaged in partnerships with private businesses and philanthropic organizations to bolster the campaign. As part of the ongoing efforts, over half a million trees are scheduled to be planted this monsoon season in various areas, including Jallo More, China Scheme, Shahdara, and along the Ring Road. These efforts are a part of the broader strategy to reclaim Lahore's title as the "city of gardens."
