U-19 Cricket: Nigeria Defeats Scotland In World Cup Warm-Up
Nigeria’s U19 Women’s Cricket team, known as the Junior Female Yellow Greens, achieved a remarkable victory against Scotland, winning by 7 wickets in a warm-up match for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Women’s World Cup. This warm-up game, organized by the ICC, provided teams with valuable on-field experience ahead of the tournament, which begins on Saturday in Malaysia.
The match took place at the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. Nigeria won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that paid off handsomely. Nigerian pace bowler Lilian Ude spearheaded the attack, delivering an impressive performance with figures of 3 wickets for just 15 runs.
Ude was well-supported by spinner Adekunle Adeshola, who took 2 wickets for 15 runs. The opening bowlers, Peace Usen and Muhibat Amusa, also contributed by claiming a wicket each. The Nigerian fielding unit was sharp, restricting Scotland to a mere 67 runs, all out in 18.2 overs.
In response, Nigeria's captain Piety Lucky led the charge in the chase. Victory Igbinedion played a crucial role, scoring 25 runs off 41 balls, helping Nigeria reach a total of 64 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in just 11.3 overs. The team's solid performance not only secured a comfortable victory but also boosted their confidence as they prepare for the World Cup.
With this victory, Nigeria heads into the World Cup with optimism, set to face Samoa in their opening match on Saturday in Group C. Following that, they will take on New Zealand on January 20th and South Africa on January 22nd. The tournament features 16 nations and will conclude on February 2nd.
This win against Scotland marks a significant step for Nigeria’s U19 Women’s Cricket team as they aim to make their mark on the international stage.
