Ukraine to Conduct Non-Public 5G Internet Trials in Lviv
Lifecell, one of Ukraine's leading mobile operators, is set to conduct non-public 5G internet trials in Lviv from September 9 to December 7. This initiative aims to assess the feasibility of implementing 5G technology across Ukraine, as announced by the National Commission for State Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum, and the Provision of Postal Services (NKEK).
The trials will simulate real-world conditions using test (non-public) SIM cards and terminals. Key objectives include:
- Testing 5G Technology: The trials will evaluate the capabilities of 5G New Radio (NR) technology in conditions that closely resemble actual usage scenarios.
- Network Core Readiness: Assessing the network core's readiness for large-scale implementation of 5G NR technology.
- Compatibility Testing: Ensuring the compatible operation of 5G NR with existing technologies such as LTE, UMTS, and GSM.
- Terminal Equipment Evaluation: Studying the capabilities of various terminal devices, including smartphones and 5G routers, to support 5G technology.
- Practical Experience: Gaining hands-on experience in supporting 5G technology with available market equipment.
In addition to real-world testing, the trials will also take place in controlled laboratory conditions to further validate the technology.
Background and Future Prospects
The push for 5G technology in Ukraine began in 2017 when former President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree to introduce it. Initial testing commenced in 2021, with plans for a broader rollout in 2022. However, the full-scale invasion by Russia disrupted these plans.
Representatives from Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation have indicated that widespread implementation of 5G networks will likely only be feasible after the war concludes. They have also expressed a neutral stance regarding the use of foreign 5G vendors, including those from China.
