Ukraine War: Morocco Votes for UN Resolution Condemning Russia, Algeria Abstains
Algeria’s notable abstention shows the Algerian regime's double standards on the question of self-determination.
Morocco is among the 141 countries that voted on a UN resolution calling for immediate Russian withdrawal from Ukraine.
The UN General Assembly voted on Thursday night on the resolution in which 141 countries were in favor of Russia withdrawing from Ukraine.
A further 32 countries abstained from voting, including Algeria, one of Russia’s oldest allies.
Algeria’s absence from the list of countries that voted against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was notable considering the country’s regime’s support for the Polisario Front, a separatist militia challenging Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces.
The country’s abstention also reflects its double standards on self-determination, supporting a separatist front’s ungrounded statehood claims in southern Morocco while remaining indifferent to the more legitimate claims of an actual sovereign country facing invasion and fighting for its right to self-determination.
Morocco’s permanent ambassador to the UN, Omar Hilale, exposed the Algerin regime’s double standards in May 2022, saying: “You are asking for self-determination for the 20,000 people you are kidnapping in the Tindouf camps, but you are denying it to a people of 12 million inhabitants.”
Hilale’s remarks referenced the Kabyle people, a native group based in the northeastern region of Algeria.
The region has undergone numerous struggles, Hilale explained, stressing that Kabylia “underwent three colonizations” -- from the Ottoman, French, and Algerian regimes. “This is the longest occupation in the history of Africa,” he said.
In addition to Algeria, Angola, Armenia, Bangladesh, Burundi, Gabon, Guinea, India, Iran, and South Africa, among others also abstained from voting the UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The seven countries that voted against the resolution include Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Syria, and Russia. Read More…
