University of Aveiro suspends professor denounced for making homophobic comments
The University of Aveiro temporarily suspended, this Monday, a professor from the physics department of that institution.
At the origin of Paulo Lopes' suspension will be homophobic comments that the professor published on Facebook, where he criticized the LGBTQ+ community. "I think we are in urgent need of an 'inquisition' to clean up all this human (?) rubbish!" wrote the university professor.
The professor's controversial phrases had already been denounced and condemned by students from the University of Aveiro who organized a demonstration.
Following the controversy, a disciplinary process was opened on Friday, culminating in the temporary suspension of the teacher, a decision that was taken this Monday.
"All the relevant elements for the process were gathered and the process was initiated last Friday. The teacher was also suspended, already within the scope of this process, so that the necessary steps can now be carried out with the indispensable tranquility", said the dean, cited by the Lusa agency.
Paulo Jorge Ferreira was speaking to journalists in front of the rectory, and at the same time, there was a demonstration, organized by students, against hate speech and discrimination at the UA, which brought together about 200 university students, who shouted phrases such as: "our fight is all day, against racism, machismo and homophobia" and "pay attention, homophobia is not an opinion".
Questioned by journalists, the rector justified the decision with "the nature of the statements and the way in which they affected the essential environment of trust that must exist between a professor and his students, the obvious conflict between the University's values and the lack of values that these statements imply and the impact on the image and values of the University itself".
