Venezuela confirms first stem cell implant for maxillofacial regeneration
Scientists from the Cell Therapy Unit (UTC) of the Regenerative Medicine Center of the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC) carried out the first stem cell implantation in a patient with bone atrophy due to tooth loss.
According to a press release from the Ministry for Science and Technology, the procedure, the first in Venezuela and Latin America, was carried out at the IVIC Dental Service, with the participation of the maxillofacial surgeon, Marcos Gómez, who works at the Unit of TMJ and Maxillofacial HOLOS and collaborator in the UTC together with a group of dentists and doctors.
The information was provided by the head of the Center for Regenerative Medicine, José Cardier, who explained that the medical diagnosis of the 82-year-old patient was mandibular alveolar atrophy after tooth extraction.
“The patient was captured by the UTC, evaluated by Dr. Gómez and then the bone regeneration process was carried out, where we will wait a period of four months to be able to have evidence of the evolution of the treatment, which would mean that in the near future this type of stem cell implant can be done,” Cardier said.
