Vietnam Calls on Taiwan to Cease Unlawful Live-Fire Drills on Ba Binh Island
Vietnam vehemently opposes and urges Taiwan to immediately halt the conduct of live-fire drills in the vicinity of Ba Binh Island, a part of Vietnam's Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, as stated by Pham Thu Hang, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on July 8.
By conducting live-fire drills near Itu Aba Island, Taiwan is blatantly violating Vietnam's territorial sovereignty over the Spratly Archipelago, the foreign ministry declared on Thursday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' spokeswoman, Pham Thu Hang, conveyed in a press release, "The act of Taiwan conducting live-fire drills in the sea areas surrounding Itu Aba, which is part of Vietnam's Spratly Islands, flagrantly violates Vietnam's sovereignty over these islands. It poses a threat to peace, stability, maritime safety and security, while also escalating tensions and exacerbating the situation in the South China Sea."
She further added, "Vietnam staunchly opposes this act and demands that Taiwan immediately cancel the aforementioned unlawful activity and refrain from committing similar violations in the future. Vietnam has a solid legal foundation, supported by historical evidence, to establish its sovereignty over the Spratly Islands."
Itu Aba, known as Ba Binh in Vietnamese, represents the largest naturally occurring island and land mass within the Spratly Islands, which fall under Vietnam's territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Taiwan has illegally occupied the island and stationed military forces in the area.
