Vietnamese Film Earns Rousing Applause at Cannes
The 2023 Cannes Film Festival witnessed a remarkable moment as the entire cast and crew of 'Ben Trong Vo Ken Vang' (Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell), the sole Vietnamese entry in the competition, were met with a standing during its global premiere in the esteemed Directors' Fortnight section. This heartfelt acknowledgment took place on Wednesday afternoon in France, captivating the audience in attendance.
'Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell,' contending for the prestigious Camera d'Or Award alongside 17 other competitors in the Directors' Fortnight, made its debut at 4:45 pm local time in France. Helmed by the talented Pham Thien An, the film narrates the compelling story of Thien, a young man entrusted with the solemn duty of transporting his sister-in-law's body to their rural hometown following a tragic motorcycle accident. Amidst the enchanting landscapes of rural Vietnam, Thien embarks on a poignant quest to find his long-lost older brother, who disappeared years ago.
As the inaugural screening of this remarkable movie concluded after three captivating hours on Wednesday, the audience erupted in an outpouring of appreciation, rising to their feet and applauding for an impressive duration of five minutes. The Associated Press (AP) reported that a five-minute standing ovation would be regarded as an extraordinary response in most parts of the world, even though it may be considered somewhat lukewarm by the standards of Cannes.
An Nguyen, an avid reader of Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, had the privilege of witnessing this emotional standing ovation firsthand. He described the response as deeply moving, stating, "This moment can truly be regarded as Vietnam's shining achievement at Cannes. Many foreigners cheered with great enthusiasm, and the spotlight was rightfully directed towards director Pham Thien An." An Nguyen also shared his previous skepticism about the authenticity of applause received at renowned film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, and Berlin, suspecting that they were often contrived or exaggerated. However, after experiencing the genuine and sustained five-minute ovation for 'Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell,' he wholeheartedly acknowledged the profound love for cinema exhibited at these esteemed events. "I am overjoyed by the overwhelmingly positive reception the film has garnered, and I feel privileged to have witnessed such a captivating and quintessentially Vietnamese production," expressed An Nguyen.
Following the screening, the cast and crew of 'Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell' expressed their gratitude to the audience in both Vietnamese and French, further reinforcing the multicultural nature of the festival and the international appreciation for their remarkable film.
