Washougal School Board Member Supports Liberian Youth Education Group
Chuck Carpenter, a Washougal School Board member and longtime community volunteer, has extended his passion for education beyond local borders to support a Liberian youth education group. Carpenter serves as a board member for the Gabanja International Volunteer Program (GIVP), a nonprofit organization that provides educational opportunities to poverty-stricken residents of Liberia.
GIVP was founded by Liberian resident Emmanuel Balo, who wanted to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children. The organization aims to provide basic reading and math skills to children who cannot afford to attend school due to poverty.
Carpenter connected with Balo on Facebook in 2021 and has since become heavily involved with the organization. He has advised GIVP leaders on managerial responsibilities, such as setting up a bank account and establishing a board of directors. Carpenter's goal is to help GIVP become self-sufficient and make a lasting impact on the lives of Liberian children.
GIVP has hired four tutors to teach 100 children basic reading and math skills. The program has been successful, with children learning to read and celebrate their achievements. Carpenter believes that the organization's efforts could be life-changing for the Liberian students, empowering them to make a difference in their communities.
Carpenter has launched a fundraiser on GoFundMe to raise money for the next educational cycle, which is set to begin in October. He has also registered a nonprofit organization in Washington state to raise money for the program. Carpenter is passionate about GIVP's continued success and believes that with the support of altruistic individuals, the organization can make a significant impact on the lives of Liberian children.
