The Ministry of Education in Kenya has launched mandatory safety inspections of all public and private schools across the nation to assess their compliance with established safety standards. This initiative, led by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, is a response to a recent surge in school fires, including a tragic incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy that resulted in the deaths of 21 students.
CS Ogamba emphasized the importance of these inspections, stating that they aim to identify the root causes of the fires and ensure that schools adhere to the guidelines set out in the Safety Standards Manual for Schools in Kenya. The inspections will be conducted by officials from the Ministries of Education, Interior, Health, and the Department of Public Works, with additional support from county governments and the Kenya Red Cross.
The first phase of the inspection, which is currently in progress, focuses on boarding primary and junior secondary schools. The second phase will extend to secondary schools. The Ministry has also reiterated its commitment to enforcing policies that ensure all boarding schools provide a safe learning environment for students.
Schools have been urged to intensify their efforts to improve safety, as outlined in the safety standards guidelines. Ogamba warned that strict action would be taken against any Ministry of Education officials, school administrators, or managers found to be in violation of these safety standards.
These inspections come in the wake of ongoing concerns about school fires across the country, underscoring the need for rigorous enforcement of safety measures to protect students.
