ASEAN diplomats in Dhaka have assured Bangladesh of strongly raising Myanmar's unlawful actions on the Myanmar-Bangladesh borders at the UN General Assembly after Dhaka sought their cooperation in preventing violence on the borders, said foreign ministry officials.
At a briefing by the foreign ministry at the state guesthouse Padma yesterday, the diplomats said they were also frustrated about the way the Myanmar junta has been handling the country's situation since it took control of the country by overthrowing the democratically elected government in February last year.
Acting Foreign Secretary Admiral (Retd) Khurshed Alam and the foreign ministry's Southeast Asia wing director general Najmul Huda briefed the envoys of ASEAN on the escalation of violence on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border between the Myanmar military and insurgent group Arakan Army.
Except for Myanmar, diplomats of all the ASEAN countries -- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam -- were present at the briefing yesterday.
The foreign ministry will today brief the rest of the foreign diplomats posted in Dhaka about Myanmar's repeated space and land violations.
"We have told the ASEAN diplomats that mortar shells and firing of bullets from Myanmar to the Bangladesh side are a serious concern for us. On Friday night, a Rohingya youth was killed and several others were injured," Najmul Huda this correspondent. Read More...
