What is a toner (and is it really necessary?)
A toner is a skincare product that you apply after your cleanser and before your serum and cream. You clean your face with a cleanser. Most cleansers have a pH between 6 and 7. The pH of our skin is 5.5. After you have used a cleanser, the pH of our skin is temporarily increased slightly, which can result in skin irritation such as redness or a dry and tight feeling. With a toner, which often has a pH of about 5, you bring the pH back into balance.
Is a toner really necessary?
People who do not have a skin condition and are blessed with calm skin probably do not suffer from skin irritation after using a cleanser. For this group of people, a toner is actually superfluous.
People with very dry, sensitive or troubled skin, and people who suffer from skin conditions such as rosacea, rosacea or eczema will experience skin irritation more quickly after using a cleanser.
