What Is Insomnia And The Types Of Insomnia?

Insomnia is a sleep defect that hinders quality sleep,making it hard to fall asleep and it can come and go at intervals. some of the causes of insomnia include irregular sleep pattern, poor sleeping habits, stress, medications, anxiety and depression, physical illness and pain, neurological problems and specific sleep disorder.   

To improve the quality of sleep, identifying the cause of the sleep disorder is the first place to begin and then treating the problem.

There are several types of insomnia and they include the following:

· Acute insomnia: this is the common type of insomnia that lasts for one night to a few weeks. It is also called adjustment insomnia because it can occur at significant times like beginning a new job or the death of a loved one.

· Chronic insomnia: is short term and becomes chronic when it lingers for about 3 nights a week for 3 months. Often referred to as idiopathic insomnia, it cannot be pinned to an underlying medical condition.

· Secondary insomnia: is also a common type that is caused by lifestyle choices, medical conditions, stimulants like caffeine and medications.

· Onset insomnia: can be long term or short term and it has to do with having trouble initiating sleep caused by stress, anxiety, or depression.

· Maintenance insomnia: is that type of insomnia where an individual finds it hard to sleep or has trouble with waking up too early and then another problem getting back to sleep. Underlying causes are mental health conditions like depression.

· Behavioural insomnia of childhood: is divided into three Behavioural insomnia of childhood sleep onset, limit setting and combined type.

· Behavioural insomnia of childhood sleep onset: this type of insomnia relies on learned behaviour from the child-like having to be rocked to sleep or having the presence of the apparent around to be able to sleep. 

· Behavioural insomnia of childhood limit setting: this type has to do with failed attempts to get a child to sleep where the child keeps coming up with excuses like wanting to pee or drink water to escape going to sleep.
