In three years, Samsung projects that shipments of the foldable Galaxy Z series will surpass those of the well-liked Galaxy S series. Sales of luxury smartphones are currently on the decline, but the new form factor is predicted to revive the sector.
“By 2025, foldable products will account for more than 50% of Samsung’s total shipments of premium smartphones,” predicted TM Roh, President of Samsung’s Mobile Experience Business. Smartphones will adopt foldable as the next standard.
According to research from Media, the foldable market is expanding quickly, increasing 309% between 2020 and 2021 for a total of 9 million shipments. The Galaxy Z Flip3 and Z Fold3 from Samsung, which sold 7.1 million handsets combined by year’s end, made up the majority of it (and they only launched in August 2021).
In terms of quantity, the Z Flip variants with lower prices are more popular. For instance, 4.6 million of the 7.1 million Z-series shipments last year are attributed to the Z Flip3. Additionally, it increased its unit count by over 1 million in the first three months of this year, accounting for more than half of all foldable supplied in Q1 2022.
Given that the new Galaxy Z models’ prices ($1,000 for the Flip and $1,800 for the Fold) are almost the same as those of their predecessors, it wouldn’t surprise us if Samsung shipped more Galaxy Z Flip4 than Z Fold4 devices.
