People have been opening up Instagram this week to find their app has turned black, without them changing the settings.
Many have been questioning a recent unprompted switch from the standard white background, with some complaining that the darker screen makes it hard for them to read the captions.
If your Instagram has automatically changed to dark mode, here’s what you can do about it.
Why has my Instagram gone dark?
The change appears to be linked to the most recent update.
Instagram is testing a revamped home screen, which CEO Adam Mosseri talked about last month.
The switch automatically turns the background black, and also increases the size of posts.
They are now laid out in a 9:16 ratio and take up most if not all of your screen, in an attempt to make the app more immersive, and more video-friendly.
Mr Mosseri explained: “We’re moving Instagram to a place where video is a bigger part of the home experience, where the content is more immersive – takes up more of the screen – where are larger part of feed are recommendations – things we think you might love but you might not have heard of yet.
“One step on that path we’re starting to experiment with, which is a test where both photos and videos take up more of your screen.
“We know the future of videos and the future of photos are mobile-first, they are 9:16, they are immersive, so what you’ll see is us testing out taller photos and taller videos in your feed.”
Mr Mosseri added that the test is likely to last a few weeks, and asked users to share their feedback.
How can I change it back?
At present, if you have an iPhone the colour of Instagram’s background cannot be changed within the app itself.
It normally mirrors your device’s settings, meaning if your phone is in light mode, the background will be white, and if it is in dark mode the background will be black.
Check your phone’s display and brightness settings to see if you are set to light or dark mode.
The best thing to do is to contact Instagram via Twitter.
If you have an Android phone you can change the settings within the Instagram app.
