Why Netflix’s Unseen Has Such Mixed Reviews
The new crime drama series on Netflix has created a polarized divide for viewers between celebrated praise and complete disappointment.
The new Netflix series Unseen has divided viewers, inspiring both positive and negative feedback. While not based on a true story, the six-episode crime thriller is an adaptation of the Turkish Netflix series Fatma. Both Unseen and Fatma carry the same premise, in which the protagonist commits a series of murders as she searches for her missing husband. Fatma was released relatively recently in 2021 and seemed to generally please viewers while Unseen has seemingly divided its audience down the middle.
Although Unseen and Fatma are similar, the biggest difference between the two series is the location. Unseen takes place in present-day Cape Town, South Africa, and identifies some of the area's societal problems through its story. Unseen protagonist Zenzi Mwale, played by Gabi Mabalanem, is a cleaner whose husband goes missing after he gets released from jail. While there has been praise online for Unseen's great acting and strong writing, viewers remain polarized on just how good the series really is. Fans of Fatma tend to prefer the original to Unseen's remake, raising the question of why it was remade in the first place.
Every Aspect Of Unseen Has Polarizing Reception

The greatest divide in viewer reactions to Unseen is the quality of its acting and plot. Some went to social media and celebrated every aspect of the show, ranking it just as high as Netflix's most popular TV series of 2023 so far, Beef. Other reviews have stated the total opposite, claiming that the show only got worse over time. Negative reviews commented mostly on the acting and plot, with complaints that it was unconvincing and poorly constructed. In the same vein, other viewers raved about the realistic acting and the compelling narrative of Unseen's story. The polarized reception to the show implies that it comes down to the individual viewer, who will either completely love it or find it a total waste of time. Read More…
