Zambia Stun Champions to Book 2025 AFCON Spot

Zambia's national football team, known as Chipolopolo, secured their place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over reigning champions Ivory Coast at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Friday evening. This crucial win marks a significant achievement for Zambia as they continue to build momentum in their campaign.

The match began with the Ivorians displaying their attacking prowess, putting Zambia under pressure early on. For the first ten minutes, the Zambian side struggled to advance the ball out of their own half, facing a determined Ivorian team. As the first half progressed, both teams engaged in a tactical battle for control in the midfield, resulting in a cagey affair.

In the 20th minute, Zambia's defense was tested when Stopilla Sunzu made a crucial block to avert a potential goal-scoring opportunity for the Elephants. However, as the half wore on, Zambia began to find their rhythm and applied sustained pressure on the Ivorian defense.

The breakthrough came just before halftime in the 43rd minute when Joseph Banda delivered a clever pass to Kennedy Musonda, who made no mistake in rifling the ball into the net. This goal gave Zambia a narrow 1-0 lead as they headed into the break, much to the delight of the home crowd.

The second half saw Ivory Coast come out with renewed energy, immediately putting Zambia on the defensive. The Ivorians dominated possession and created several chances, but the Zambian defense, led by a resolute performance, held firm. The Copper Bullets showcased their ability to counterattack effectively, posing a threat to the Ivorian goal.

In the 79th minute, Zambia nearly doubled their lead after a dangerous move inside the Ivory Coast box. However, Ivorian goalkeeper Yahia Fofana made a spectacular save in a one-on-one situation, keeping his team in the game.

As the match approached its conclusion, Zambia faced a nervy finish, with the Ivorians pushing for an equalizer. Despite the pressure, Chipolopolo remained composed and managed to hold on for the victory, securing all three points and confirming their spot in next year's AFCON tournament.

This victory not only highlights Zambia's resilience and determination but also sets the stage for an exciting campaign in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. The team's performance against the champions of Africa demonstrates their potential and ambition as they look to make a mark on the continental stage.
