Alain Berset Seeks Re-Election in December
Alain Berset, a member of the Federal Council, is not ready to step down just yet. He has expressed his intention to seek re-election in December.
Alain Berset, currently serving as the President of Swiss Confederation at the age of 51, has announced his desire to participate in the upcoming Federal Council elections scheduled for December. Speaking at the Swiss Economic Forum, the Social Democratic Party representative and incumbent President of Swiss Radio and Television (SRF) acknowledged that there is still much unfinished business and a plethora of tasks to be tackled.
Having assumed office as a member of the Federal Council in December 2011, Alain Berset has been responsible for the Interior Department (EDI) ever since. In an interview with Blick last December, he expressed his determination to continue working beyond 2023, emphasizing his eagerness to drive progress in his portfolio. Brimming with energy, he is resolute in his decision to carry on.
Alain Berset remains deeply passionate about his role in the Interior Department. He attested to his contentment in that position, highlighting the numerous ongoing challenges in healthcare policy, particularly the need for unified financing of both outpatient and inpatient services.
Although Alain Berset's election as Federal President in December 2022 was accompanied by a lukewarm reception, with only 140 out of 181 valid votes in his favor, he remains undeterred. Speculation had previously circulated that he might not be allowed to switch to the finance or foreign affairs department in the event of departmental redistribution.
