Ban on Hijab: SC refuses early hearing on petitions challenging Karnataka HC verdict

India's Supreme Court today declined a request for an early hearing on the petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court's ruling that upheld a ban on wearing of hijabs inside educational institutions.
The top court also did not give any specific date to hear the petitions, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
Responding to a plea that the matter be heard next week as it would otherwise stop the girl students from appearing for their exams, Chief Justice of India N V Ramana said "This has nothing to do with the exams…don't sensitise."
Appearing for the petitioners, senior lawyer Devadatt Kamat said the exams will start from March 28. "One year will go. All these girls are being prevented from entering the school. Lordships may fix some date next week."
Earlier too, the apex court had turned down urgent hearing on the petitions challenging the high court verdict.
On March 15, a three-member bench of the Karnataka High Court dismissed a batch of petitions filed by Muslim girls studying in pre-university colleges in Udupi, Karnataka, seeking the right to wear hijabs in classrooms.
