Belgian Football Chief Pascale Van Damme Vies for Seat on FIFA Council
Pascale Van Damme, the President of the Royal Belgian Football Association, has officially announced her candidacy for a seat on the FIFA Council, as revealed by UEFA on Monday. The election for this influential position within world football's governing body is set to take place on April 3 at the 49th UEFA Congress in Belgrade, Serbia.
The FIFA Council, which replaced the FIFA Executive Committee in 2016 following a series of scandals, plays a crucial role in the governance of football. It is a strategic body responsible for making key decisions that shape the future of the sport. Each confederation, including UEFA, has representatives on the Council, which consists of three deputy chairpersons—one of whom is UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin—and six additional members.
Among these six seats, one is specifically reserved for a woman, and Pascale Van Damme is currently the sole candidate for this position, which will serve a four-year term. Her candidacy marks a significant step for female representation in football governance.
In addition to Van Damme, several male candidates are vying for the remaining positions on the Council, including Razvan Burleanu, Georgios Koumas, Bernd Neuendorf, and Dejan Savicevic, all of whom are seeking to extend their current terms.
As the election approaches, Van Damme's candidacy highlights the ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the leadership of football organizations, paving the way for greater representation of women in the sport.
