Kaylia Nemour Makes History as Algeria's First Olympic Gold Medalist in Gymnastics
In a stunning display of skill and determination, 17-year-old Kaylia Nemour became the first African to win an Olympic medal in women's artistic gymnastics on the uneven bars, securing Algeria's inaugural Olympic gold medal in the sport.
Nemour's thrilling routine in the uneven bars final on Sunday, August 4th, earned her a score of 15.7, the highest of the meet across all events, narrowly edging out China's Qiu Qiyuan. This historic victory marks Algeria's sixth Olympic gold medal since its debut in the Tokyo 1964 Games.
Overcome with emotion, Nemour expressed her joy and pride, saying, "I'm thrilled to have won this medal. It hasn't fully sunk in yet, but I believe it will as time passes. I take great pride in bringing this gold medal home for Algeria and Africa; it's truly amazing."
Born in Saint-Benoit-la-Foret, France, to an Algerian father and French mother, Nemour initially represented France but later chose to compete for Algeria, sparking controversy in her native country. However, Nemour has put the past behind her, stating, "Well, I don't really think about it, this medal is for me and for Algeria. I represent Algeria now, France is behind me, I have turned the page, that's it."
Nemour's coach, Marc Tcherlinko, drew parallels between Nemour's achievement and that of Nadia Comaneci, the Romanian gymnast who scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic history. "Nadia is always in our hearts. Kaylia has a bit of Nadia in her; this medal signifies more than just victory. It reflects her inner journey and today stands for Algeria and its federation. This is her hard work, and it ties her to her father's heritage."
Nemour's decision to represent Algeria was motivated by her desire to connect with her father's heritage. Following a dispute with the French gymnastics federation and her club, Avoine Beaumont, Nemour opted to compete under the Algerian flag, proudly displaying it after her victory.
The crowd erupted in cheers as Nemour secured Algeria's first-ever gymnastics medal, marking a historic moment for the country and the sport.
