Claudia Sheinbaum Names Five New Members to Her Cabinet
President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum announced five additional officials for her incoming cabinet on Thursday from the Interactive Museum of Economics in Mexico City (MIDE). These appointments will be effective as of October 1.
Sheinbaum unveiled the leaders of the main Secretariats of her administration. The appointees are:
- David Kershenobich as head of the Ministry of Health (SSA).
- Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez as head of the Ministry of Public Administration.
- Luz Elena González as head of the Secretariat of Energy (Sener).
- Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina as head of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).
- Edna Elena Vega as head of the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu).
Appointees' Backgrounds:
Luz Elena González, Secretary of Energy:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Economics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), master's degree in Law from the Technological University, and a master's degree in Urban Planning from the University of Catalonia.
- Career: She has served as Secretary of Finance of Mexico City, coordinating with Pemex and the CFE. Notably, she contributed to the construction of a solar array at the Central de Abastos, a key project under Sheinbaum.
Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez, Federal Comptroller:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from UNAM and a master's degree in Economics from the College of Mexico.
- Career: Since 2022, she has been the Secretary of Economy. Previously, she led the country’s tax agency, playing a significant role in President AMLO’s financial policies, including austerity measures and tax base expansion. She has also represented the government internationally on issues related to the USCMA.
Edna Elena Vega Rangel, Secretary of Agrarian, Land, and Urban Development:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM), a master's in Metropolitan Planning, and a doctorate in Sociology with a specialty in societies and territory.
- Career: She has extensive experience working with housing non-profits and government organizations in Mexico City. She led Conavi, Mexico’s housing authority, and was appointed Undersecretary of Territorial and Agrarian Planning of Sedatu in 2022.
David Kershenobich, Secretary of Health:
- Expertise: Specializes in liver disease and has served as the director of the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition. He is also a level III emeritus researcher of the National Researchers System.
Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, Secretary of Infrastructure, Communication, and Transportation:
- Education: Civil Engineer and Master in Structures from UNAM.
- Career: Esteva has worked on numerous infrastructure projects in Mexico City, including the Vasconcelos Library. Since 2018, he has been the head of the Secretariat of Works and Services of Mexico City.
Sheinbaum noted that Raquel Buenrostro and Jesús Esteva will continue in their current roles while participating in the transition to the new administration. These appointments underscore her commitment to continuity and expertise in her cabinet.
