Day Trip Out Of Nairobi: Mount Kenya Hike
If you are looking for a day trip out of Nairobi, then consider a Mount Kenya hike. I went on the hike sometime last year but I definitely cheated, I didn’t summit the mountain but I hiked its foothills and it was brutal. I am probably the most unfit person out here and I paid for it as I was in pain and limping for days.
Route
There are several access points for hiking the foothills of Mount Kenya and we used the Castle Forest entry point.

Distance
We covered around 20 km the entire hike, around 34,000 steps. For someone who doesn’t do a lot of walking, maybe does about 3,000 steps a day, I suffered a lot. By the time we were going back to our bus, I couldn’t even feel or lift my legs.
The Experience
While out there hiking, ensure that you stick with the guide because at one point since everyone was walking at different paces, we got separated from the rest of the group. We got to a crossroads and couldn’t figure out which route to take and we ended up getting lost for like 2 hours. Mind you, we were in the middle of nowhere with no cell service. That was the longest 2 hours of my life. Luckily enough, one of us got a single bar on his cell phone and called for help.
Ensure that you wear shoes that have a good grip on them because going to the waterfalls can tend to be very slippery. I am saying this out of the experience because I ended up falling and I got mad all over myself. This is the second time, I am falling while out on a trip, yes I know I am a klutz, the first time I fell was when I went to Tsavo West. Read More…
