Denmark to Send Leopard 2 Tanks to Ukraine This Summer
Denmark, in coordination with the Netherlands, is set to deliver a fleet of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine by the end of this summer. This development marks a significant step in international military support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.
Last year, Denmark and the Netherlands collaborated to purchase the German-made Leopard 2 tanks for 165 million euros ($186 million). These tanks were subsequently sent for refurbishment to ensure they are battle-ready for deployment.
Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans announced, "Yesterday and today, the last two Leopard 2s are undergoing their verification tests as part of the delivery." He confirmed, "All 14 tanks will be delivered simultaneously before the end of the summer."
The commitment to provide Leopard 2 tanks is part of a broader strategy involving several European nations. Last year, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany pledged to supply Ukraine with approximately 100 Leopard 1 tanks, the predecessor to the Leopard 2 model.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Brekelmans stated, "Ukraine urgently needs more military support, given the heavy fighting on the battlefield. These tanks can play an important role for the Ukrainian army in defending itself against the Russian troops."
This announcement comes shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the transfer of Dutch and Danish F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine was in progress. The collective effort of these countries underscores the international community's commitment to bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities.
The Leopard 2 tanks are renowned for their advanced technology and battlefield efficiency. Their deployment is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine's defensive and offensive operations against Russian forces.
The impending delivery of Leopard 2 tanks by Denmark and the Netherlands is a critical development in the ongoing support for Ukraine. As international efforts continue to ramp up, these tanks are poised to play a crucial role in Ukraine's defense strategy.
