Deselection is possible: 11 candidates are challenging the previous Zurich government councillors
Government and cantonal elections will soon take place in the canton of Zurich. All seven current members of the government council are standing for re-election. Eleven new politicians compete with them for their seats and also stand for election.
On February 12, the electorate of the canton of Zurich will elect new members of the government and cantonal council . The government council election in particular remains exciting: all seven current government council members want to keep their seats, the FDP and SP want to get two seats and the fourth-strongest Zurich party, the GLP, also wants to win a seat on the body.
What does the governing council do?
The Government Council represents the executive branch at cantonal level. It upholds the constitution and implements the laws, ordinances and resolutions of the cantonal council. The seven members are heads of the various directorates and are elected by the people every four years.

For them, the elections in February could represent a turning point - because the education department is popular with the government council seat candidates.
One candidate in particular could be dangerous for Steiner: Priska Seiler Graf (SP). The Tamedia election poll shows that Steiner and Seiler Graf share seventh place, with 36 percent of respondents each voting for them.
