Germany‘s oldest elephant: Lonesome Targa has died aged 67
Germany’s oldest elephant has died at Augsburg Zoo at the age of 67, DPA reported, citing zoo director Thomas Lipp.
“Targa was an icon of our zoo,” he told the Augsburg Allgemeine after the elephant went to sleep for the last time on Monday.
She was the oldest elephant in Germany and one of the specimens of the species that lived the longest in captivity in the world. Thomas Lipp said zoo staff were moved to tears by the news of the animal’s death.
Targa was born in India in 1955 and arrived in Germany at the age of 6. The elephant first lived for a while in Hamburg and then in Osnabrück before being settled in Augsburg. She has lived in the local zoo for 35 years. Targa lives there with his partner until mid-2021.
