Indonesia Aims for Olympic Gold with New Cibubur Youth Elite Sport Center
Indonesia is making significant strides toward enhancing its athletic capabilities with the development of the Cibubur Youth Elite Sport Center (CYESC) in East Jakarta. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka visited the facility on Tuesday to assess its progress, emphasizing its importance in preparing athletes for the upcoming 2028 Olympics.
With a budget of Rp 249 billion (approximately $16 million), the CYESC is expected to be completed and inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto in December 2024. Gibran highlighted the strategic nature of the project, stating, “This is a very strategic project, crucial for improving future athletic performance. I saw that the facilities are already very comprehensive.”
Designed to meet international standards, the sports center will serve as the primary training hub for Indonesian athletes. Gibran noted, “There are no longer any excuses for not achieving results. The training facilities are sufficient. Now we just need to see the performance align with international standards.”
Taufik Hidayat, the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, echoed Gibran's sentiments, stressing the importance of a long-term focus on athlete development to achieve ambitious targets, including winning more gold medals in international competitions.
Indonesia's recent performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics saw the country secure 2 gold medals and 1 bronze. Notably, Veddriq Leonardo, a speed climber, and Rizki Juniansyah, a weightlifter, were the gold medalists, with Veddriq making history as the first Indonesian non-badminton athlete to win an Olympic gold. Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, a women's singles badminton player, contributed to the medal tally with a bronze.
In addition to his visit to the CYESC, Gibran also reviewed the construction of the Phase 1B Light Rail Transit (LRT) route, which spans 6.4 kilometers from Velodrome to Manggarai. He was accompanied by Jakarta's Acting Governor Teguh Setyabudi and East Jakarta Mayor Muhammad Anwar during this visit.
The establishment of the Cibubur Youth Elite Sport Center represents Indonesia's commitment to fostering athletic talent and achieving greater success on the international stage, particularly as the nation sets its sights on the 2028 Olympics.
