Innovative Project Aims to Bring 5G Connectivity to Remote Areas of Alentejo
An exciting new initiative is set to transform connectivity in the remote regions of Alentejo, Portugal, with plans to implement 5G network coverage by 2026. This project, known as “5G.RURAL - 5G for Rural Smart Communities of Tomorrow,” aims to serve approximately 70,000 residents in the area and represents a significant investment of €5.3 million.
The consortium leading this initiative is spearheaded by dstelecom, a telecommunications company that emphasizes the project's innovative nature at both national and European levels. The project will be officially presented at an event at the Portalegre Tapestry Museum, highlighting its importance to the local community.
According to dstelecom, the 5G.RURAL project is designed to create methodologies that could revolutionize broadband connectivity, particularly in rural areas. The goal is not only to enhance connectivity within Portugal but also to establish a replicable model that can be implemented across Europe, aligning with the European strategy aimed at expanding broadband access in underserved regions.
The project is ambitious in its scope, with a clear focus on the practical applications of 5G technology. By 2026, it aims to deploy a variety of use cases based on 5G in the remote areas of Alentejo. This advancement is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents by enhancing their access to connectivity, which is increasingly essential in today's digital age.
The financial structure of the project is noteworthy, with a budget of €5.3 million, of which 75% is co-financed by community funds. This funding model underscores the collaborative effort between public and private sectors to enhance infrastructure in rural areas.
In addition to dstelecom, the consortium includes several key partners: NOS, a major telecommunications operator in Portugal; Innovation Point, a subsidiary of dstgroup; and IrRadiare, which brings additional expertise to the project. Together, these companies are committed to ensuring that the benefits of 5G technology reach the rural communities of Alentejo.
The 5G.RURAL project represents a significant step forward in bridging the digital divide, ensuring that even the most remote areas of Portugal can benefit from advanced connectivity solutions. As the project progresses, it holds the promise of not only enhancing local economies but also improving the overall quality of life for residents in Alentejo.
