Italy Will Be Extra Crowded During Its Jubilee Year in 2025: Here’s What You Need to Know
If you’re planning a trip to Italy in 2025, be aware that it will be a Jubilee Year, a significant religious event that occurs every 25 years. This special occasion is expected to attract millions of extra tourists to Rome and the Vatican, making it essential for visitors to prepare accordingly.
The Jubilee Year is a religious celebration observed by Catholics, marked by a series of events and rituals in Rome and at the Vatican. The festivities will include papal masses, audiences, and pilgrimages to important religious sites, such as the Holy Stairs and St. Peter’s Basilica. The Jubilee Year officially began on December 24, 2024, when Pope Francis opened the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica, through which an estimated 32 million pilgrims are expected to pass throughout the year.
During the 2025 Jubilee Year, it is anticipated that 25 million visitors will flock to Rome to participate in the religious rites and celebrations. This influx will lead to hotel occupancy rates reaching 90 percent, and travelers who do not secure advance tickets for attractions may find themselves disappointed.
Raffaele Di Santo, regional manager for Italy at Daytrip, notes, “During the 2025 Jubilee Year, travellers should expect an influx of religious pilgrims, with an estimated 20 percent to 30 percent increase in visitors to the Vatican and other key religious sites in Rome.” To avoid the busiest times, he recommends visiting major attractions early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
The 2025 Jubilee Year promises to be a remarkable time to visit Italy, filled with religious significance and cultural experiences. However, the expected surge in visitors means that careful planning is essential. By booking accommodations and tickets in advance, respecting local customs, and being prepared for larger crowds, you can make the most of your trip to this historic and vibrant city during a truly special time.
