Kenya’s First Sci-Fi Series Subterranea is set to premiere on Showmax this September
Kenya's first-ever sci-fi series, Subterranea, is set to premiere on Showmax on September 26, 2024. Directed by the multi-award-winning filmmaker Likarion Wainaina, who previously helmed the acclaimed superhero film Supa Modo, Subterranea promises to be a groundbreaking project in Kenyan television.
This eight-part series, produced by Kibanda Pictures, centers on a psychological experiment involving eight participants placed in an underground bunker. The experiment, designed to explore the effects of seclusion on human behavior and relationships, takes a dark turn when an unforeseen catastrophe traps the participants in the bunker, leaving them with no escape.
Wainaina has assembled a stellar Kenyan cast for Subterranea, featuring Kalasha Award winners Foi Wambui, Peter Kawa, and Nice Githinji, along with nominees Melvin Alusa and Melissa Kiplagat. The series also stars filmmaker Philippa Ndisi-Herrmann, Kenyan Theatre Awards winner Dadson Gakenga, and rising talent Chintu Chudasama.
Wainaina, who previously made history with Supa Modo, comments that Subterranea defies conventional sci-fi expectations by focusing on the psychological impacts of scientific experimentation rather than on futuristic technology or space travel. Co-produced by Wainaina and series creator Brian Munene, Subterranea tackles universal human themes that resonate with Kenyan audiences, including male postpartum depression, PTSD among armed forces, and the influence of cults.
With Subterranea, Wainaina continues his legacy of innovative storytelling, offering a fresh and bold narrative that could redefine Kenyan television. The series also holds potential for international success, with sales being handled by MultiChoice Studios.
