Kenyan Athletes gear up for glory at Diamond League in Brussels
Kenyan athletes are gearing up for the Diamond League finals in Brussels, with high hopes of asserting their dominance on the global stage. The two-day event, taking place on Friday and Saturday, features some of Kenya’s top track and field stars, all eyeing the coveted Diamond League trophy.
Leading the Charge:
Mary Moraa, the Olympic 800m bronze medallist, is at the forefront, aiming to cap off her season on a high note. Moraa is in exceptional form, having recently won the Zurich Diamond League, where she clocked an impressive 1:57.08. This followed her stunning world record-breaking performance in the 600m at the ISTAF Berlin meet, where she ran a blistering 1:21.63. Moraa has already secured wins in Doha and Lausanne and finished second in the Eugene meeting, trailing only Olympic champion Keeley Hodgkinson. With 31 points, Moraa is tied with Britain's Jemma Reekie and faces tough competition in Brussels, including rivals like Reekie and Jamaica’s Natoya Toppin.
Men’s 1500m Challenge:
In the men's 1500m, a strong Kenyan contingent, including Timothy Cheruiyot, Brian Komen, Reynold Cheruiyot, and Boaz Kiprugut, will compete. Although Kenyans have struggled to secure victories in recent League events, Komen led a Kenyan podium sweep in Doha earlier this year. However, their recent performances in Lausanne and Zurich have been challenging, with none of the Kenyans making it to the podium. The competition will be fierce, with opponents like Olympic champion Cole Hocker, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and Yared Nuguse.
Men’s 5,000m and 800m:
Ronald Kwemoi leads Kenya’s charge in the men's 5,000m, supported by Jacob Krop, Nicholas Kipkorir, and Cornelius Kemboi. They will face a tough field that includes Olympic 10,000m silver medallist Berihu Aregawi and Switzerland’s Dominic Lobalu.
In one of the most anticipated showdowns, Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi will clash with Canada’s Marco Arop in the men’s 800m. Wanyonyi, who holds the second-fastest time in history (1:41.11), is out for revenge after Arop edged him in their last meeting.
3,000m Steeplechase Showdown:
The men’s 3,000m steeplechase will see Abraham Kibiwot, Amos Serem, and Wilberforce Kones take on Morocco’s two-time Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali, in what promises to be a thrilling contest.
As the competition heats up in Brussels, the Kenyan athletes are determined to showcase their prowess and bring home victories in their respective events.
