Lisbon Implements Disaster Preparedness Measures Ahead of Earthquake Anniversary

In a proactive response to potential disasters, the city of Lisbon has announced a series of comprehensive measures aimed at ensuring the safety and preparedness of its residents. With a total of 86 official meeting points strategically located throughout the city, citizens are urged to familiarize themselves with these locations, where they should gather in the event of a disaster. This initiative coincides with the upcoming 269th anniversary of the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck Lisbon on November 1, 1755.

The Lisbon City Council has emphasized the importance of these meeting points, which collectively can accommodate over 600,000 people. Each point has been carefully identified through a risk analysis conducted by municipal civil protection authorities, ensuring that they are accessible to residents in all parishes. In the event of a disaster such as an earthquake, tsunami, flood, or fire, residents are advised to move to the nearest meeting point if it becomes unsafe to remain at home or inside a building.

To further enhance disaster preparedness, the city has launched the LXResist online platform, which is now operational and provides essential information for residents to consult. This platform aims to equip citizens with the knowledge needed to mitigate the impact of potential disasters, particularly earthquakes, which are a significant concern for the region. Users can learn about the types of buildings common in Lisbon and receive guidance on how to protect their homes and belongings. For instance, the platform offers practical advice, such as securing furniture to walls and creating an effective escape plan with family members.

Additionally, the LXResist platform encourages residents to prepare an emergency kit in advance, ensuring that they have the necessary supplies on hand in case of an emergency. This kit might include food, water, first-aid supplies, and other essentials that would be crucial in the aftermath of a disaster.

In an effort to keep citizens informed, Lisbon residents can also subscribe to receive SMS alerts from municipal civil protection services. By sending the text "AVISOSLX" to the number 927 944 000, residents can receive timely notifications specific to alerts in the capital, further enhancing their ability to respond quickly to emergencies.

The presentation of these disaster preparedness measures took place at Lisbon City Hall, underscoring the city's commitment to safeguarding its residents in light of historical events that have shaped its landscape. As Lisbon continues to grow and evolve, these initiatives reflect a forward-thinking approach to disaster management, aiming to empower citizens with the tools and knowledge necessary to protect themselves and their families in times of crisis.
