Lisbon metro reopening ahead of schedule
Circulation on the Lisbon metro between Telheiras and Campo Grande (Green line) and between Campo Grande and Cidade Universitária (Yellow line) will resume on June 20, two weeks earlier than initially planned.
Metropolitano de Lisboa made an initial prediction that the two sections would experience a disruption of their circulation between May 2nd and July 7th due to ongoing expansion works. Vítor Domingues, the chairman of the board of directors of Metropolitano de Lisboa (AML), announced several measures to ease the constraints caused by the provisional closure of Telheiras station and the Campo Grande section.
One of the measures presented by the president of ML was the resumption of train circulation on the Green line with six carriages, the maximum capacity, and four carriages on the Odivelas/Campo Grande section from June 20. Normal circulation with full capacity on the Yellow and Green lines will resume on July 8, at 6:30 am.
In addition, the ML administration declared that shuttle buses would be available between Cidade Universitária and Campo Grande on Sporting match days (May 13th and 21st) and Bênção das Fitas (May 20th).
Furthermore, ML plans to reinforce teams, with its own personnel at the Campo Grande station and other locations (when required), to assist passengers in moving around and entering and exiting trains. While Metropolitano regrets the inconvenience caused, it reaffirms that these constraints on the operation of the transport service are crucial for the execution of the expansion works, stated Vítor Domingues. The limitations on the circulation of the Lisbon metro have attracted criticism from various groups, including users, mayors, and environmentalists.
