Morecambe Bay among England's best places for sea kayaking
Morecambe Bay, a picturesque location in Lancashire, has been recognized as one of the premier spots for sea kayaking in England, according to a list compiled by Countryfile in collaboration with Paddle UK.
Highlighting the beauty and diversity of England’s coastal landscapes, Countryfile introduced the list by stating, "Here are some of our top places to sea kayak around England's coast. From brilliant cliff lines to fascinating historical landmarks, these coastal paddling adventures have it all to offer." However, they also emphasized the importance of being well-prepared for such adventures, noting the need for appropriate clothing, equipment, favorable weather conditions, and sufficient kayaking skills to handle the sea.
Morecambe Bay was particularly praised for its stunning wildlife and unique habitats, making it a "truly special place to paddle." As one of the largest intertidal mudflat and sand systems in the UK, the bay offers a variety of kayaking experiences, supported by its designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its rare and diverse wildlife.
The bay's coastline is shaped by the confluence of five different rivers, creating a varied and dynamic environment for kayakers. Nearly every town along the bay’s coast provides easy access to the water, serving as ideal starting points for kayaking adventures. Additionally, for days when the sea conditions are less favorable, paddlers can utilize England's only coastal canal route, located just off the beach.
Morecambe Bay stands alongside other top sea kayaking spots in England, including Whitby, Cuckmere Haven, Mersea Island, and the Jurassic Coast, as recommended by Countryfile and Paddle UK. These locations are celebrated for their breathtaking scenery, diverse wildlife, and the unique experiences they offer to paddlers of all levels.
