Moroccan Authorities Arrested Six for Promoting Illegal Border Crossing Online
In a significant operation, Moroccan authorities have arrested six individuals, including a minor, for promoting irregular immigration to Ceuta through online platforms. The arrests were carried out by the Prefectural Judicial Police of Tétouan in coordination with the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) and the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
The cybersecurity division of the DGSN identified online posts and digital content suggesting an intent to breach the security fence between Fnideq and Ceuta. These posts reportedly influenced users on social media platforms to engage in irregular migration, prompting a thorough investigation and on-the-ground inquiries.
The arrested individuals, aged between 16 and 31, were identified and apprehended across multiple locations, including Tetouan, Casablanca, Souk Larbaa, Ksar El Kebir, and Tangier. They are currently undergoing a judicial investigation to determine the underlying motives behind their criminal activities.
The arrests come amid concerns about border security, particularly at the Fnideq-Ceuta border. In August, a security alert was triggered when minors attempted to breach the border, exploiting thick fog and heavy visitor traffic to evade security forces.
Moroccan border control, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, has been working to address the issue of irregular immigration. In 2023, approximately 87,000 individuals attempting to migrate to Europe were intercepted.
The crackdown on online promoters of irregular immigration is a significant step in Morocco's efforts to combat human trafficking and irregular migration.
