Police in North Brussels made over 300 arrests this summer
Police in North Brussels have made a significant number of arrests in the area surrounding the Brussels North Station during the summer months of July and August. A total of 333 individuals were arrested for various crimes, including drug trafficking and theft, as part of intensified security operations in the neighborhood.
The area around Brussels North Station has long been known for its challenges, including issues with drug trafficking, prostitution, squatting, and the presence of individuals struggling with addiction or mental health problems. The situation reached a critical point in late 2022 when a police officer was tragically stabbed to death in the neighborhood, prompting an increase in police activity.
Following a brief reduction in operations during the Euros, police ramped up their efforts again, leading to the 333 arrests over the summer. In addition to the arrests, police seized over 4 kilograms of narcotics, including cannabis and cocaine, and more than 1,000 pills, including amphetamines, Lyrica, and ecstasy.
Police also focused on targeting pickpocketing and drug-related activities, particularly in the Brabantstraat area. Since the beginning of August, 12 individuals were caught in the act of theft or selling stolen goods, and five people were arrested for selling or possessing narcotics.
Moreover, law enforcement conducted checks on nearly 40 businesses, focusing on compliance with legal regulations. One significant operation at a newsagent's on Liedtsplein resulted in the seizure of 1,273 liters of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas.
These efforts reflect the ongoing commitment of the police to improve safety and reduce crime in this troubled part of Brussels.
