National Library Puts Handke’s Notebooks With Handwritten Notes Online
The Austrian National Library (ÖNB) has recently made a significant collection of handwritten notes by Nobel Prize-winning author Peter Handke publicly accessible for the first time. This collection comprises 21 notebooks, totaling 3,000 pages of handwritten notes, which have been digitized and made available online as facsimiles. The collection also includes annotated transcriptions and three registers.
These notebooks, which date from 1976 to 1979, document Handke's practice of recording spontaneous impressions and reflections in a personal and detailed manner. Many of these entries were made during his travels around the world. Between 1971 and 1990, Handke filled 75 notebooks with approximately 11,000 pages.
The publication of the first 21 notebooks is part of an ongoing project that will eventually make more of Handke's notes available to the public. The ÖNB collaborated with the German Literature Archive in Marbach for this project.
