New Exhibition Celebrates the Work of Dutch Photographer Paul Huf

Paul Huf discovered his passion for photography as a teenager, inspired by his father's hobby in the medium. By the 1950s, he had risen to prominence, becoming a sought-after photographer known for his striking images. Huf's career took off rapidly, and by his 30s, he was frequently commissioned by prestigious magazines, advertising campaigns, and record labels. Notably, he became the first official court photographer for the Dutch Royal Family in 1952 and created a series of album covers for Phillips featuring British model Ann Pickford.

International Influence and Style

Curator Claartje van Dijk highlights Huf's international experiences, noting that he briefly worked in Paris in the 1940s and spent time in the United States in the late 1950s. Despite these opportunities, Huf chose to remain in the Netherlands, preferring to be a "big fish in a small pond," as he often expressed.

The exhibition features over a hundred iconic images from Huf's extensive career, including:

- The Craftsmanship is Mastery campaign for Grolsch Brewery

- Fashion shoots for magazines like Margriet and Avenue

- Portraits of legendary Ajax football players, including Klass Nuninga, Sjaak Swart, Piet Keizer, and Johan Cruijff

Huf's trademark style is evident throughout the exhibition, characterized by playful compositions, a keen eye for mood and atmosphere, and a thoughtful use of color. Van Dijk notes that Huf was an early adopter of color film and was not afraid to experiment with his craft.

Influences and Legacy

Huf's artistic sensibilities were shaped by his family background. His father, a prominent Dutch actor, introduced him to the "power of theatre," inspiring Huf to create staged scenes with props in limited spaces. His mother, a head buyer at a high-end department store in Amsterdam, instilled in him a strong sense of style. Van Dijk remarks, "Paul Huf had a sense of quality behind the camera and in his own daily life."

Huf's confidence in his work set new standards in the photography industry. He was known for selling his prints at substantial prices, believing that high prices reflected quality. This approach helped establish a precedent for fair financial compensation for professional photographers.

In addition to his photographic achievements, Huf was instrumental in the founding of the Foam Museum, which opened its doors in 2001. He learned of the museum's opening shortly before his passing and expressed profound joy at the realization of a project that was close to his heart.

Continuing Impact

Huf's legacy is one of innovation, imagination, and mastery of the photographic craft. In recognition of his contributions to photography and the Dutch art scene, the Foam Museum has awarded the Foam Paul Huf Award since 2007, supporting emerging photographers on a global scale.

The "Golden Years" exhibition not only honors Huf's remarkable career but also serves as an inspiration for future generations of photographers, celebrating the enduring impact of his work on the art of photography.
