Park Hang-seo Shortlisted for Malaysia National Football Coach Position
The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has shortlisted five candidates to lead the national team, including former Vietnam head coach Park Hang-seo. Park, 66, is widely regarded as the greatest coach of Vietnamese football, having achieved numerous successes during his tenure, including a silver medal at the 2018 AFC U-23 Championship, victory in the 2018 AFF Cup, and advancement to the third round of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
Park's application for the Malaysia head coach position was initially denied by his representative, but it appears that he is now being considered for the role. FAM is willing to offer a high salary of 200,000 Malaysian ringgit ($47,000) per month, more than double what the previous head coach Kim Pan-gon received.
Park has been out of a coaching job since his contract with Vietnam ended in January 2023, but he has been linked to various positions in India, Southeast Asia, and Vietnam. According to sources close to Park, he intends to lead another team before retiring and is carefully considering his next move to ensure it is a meaningful one.
FAM president Datuk Amin has stated that the association is looking for a coach who can take the team to the next level, and is willing to pay a high salary to attract the right candidate. The current interim coach, Paul Marti Vicente, has done well in his temporary role, but FAM will evaluate his performance after the 2024 AFF Cup before deciding on his future.
Park's experience and success in Southeast Asian football make him a strong candidate for the Malaysia head coach position. If appointed, he would bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the team, and could potentially lead Malaysia to new heights in the region.
