Injured Henry Martin would not be participating in the upcoming matches with Mexico
The Mexican National Team will be without key striker Henry Martín for their upcoming matches against Club Valencia and the United States. Martín has been sidelined due to muscle issues, preventing him from training with the national squad. In his place, defender Erik Lira has been called up, potentially paving the way for more playing time for naturalized forward Germán Berterame.
The scheduled matches are set for Saturday, October 12, and Tuesday, October 15. However, Club América has requested that Martín be allowed to rest, ensuring he is fit for the club's league matches resuming on October 19.
So far in 2024, Martín has been a consistent figure for América, featuring in 47 games—roughly 1.2 games per week—but his involvement with the national team has been less frequent.
With Erik Lira joining the squad, Mexico remains with 27 players for these two fixtures, which aren't expected to present significant challenges. Coach Javier Aguirre's roster initially included four central forwards—Henry Martín, Raúl Jiménez, Germán Berterame, and Raúl Jiménez—with plans to rotate them. Aguirre's tactical vision for Mexico involves deploying a traditional center forward supported by an offensive midfielder and wingers to enhance the attack.
In previous matches against New Zealand and Canada, Santiago Giménez was the preferred starter, although he was often substituted in the second half. Germán Berterame, who has scored five goals in the tournament—matching Martín's tally during his recent dip in form—might play a bigger role in the upcoming games.
