Pioneering Moroccan Modernist Celebrated at Art Basel Paris
In a significant milestone for Moroccan art, seven works by the trailblazing modernist Mohamed Melehi will be showcased at Art Basel Paris, marking the first time a Moroccan gallery has participated in this prestigious fair. Melehi, who passed away in 2020, is celebrated for his vibrant and dynamic artistic style, characterized by colorful waves that he referred to as his “handwriting.”
Rejecting the traditional colonial styles of painting that dominated the art scene, Melehi was a pioneer of geometric and pop art-influenced experiments. His innovative approach played a pivotal role in shaping the aesthetic landscape of post-independence Morocco, making him a key figure in the country’s modern art movement. As noted by Arab News, his work not only reflects a unique cultural identity but also resonates with broader themes of independence and self-expression.
The exhibition comes at a time of surging interest in Moroccan art, as highlighted by the co-founder of Casablanca’s Loft Art Gallery. “I can see it when we exhibit outside Morocco, like in France or London,” they remarked. “People also often say, ‘Oh, we’re coming to Marrakesh next year or next month, and we want to visit your gallery.’” This growing curiosity about Moroccan art underscores the importance of platforms like Art Basel in bringing attention to the rich and diverse artistic heritage of the region.
As the art world increasingly recognizes the contributions of Moroccan artists, Melehi’s work stands out as a testament to the power of creativity in challenging conventions and expressing cultural narratives. The showcase at Art Basel Paris not only honors his legacy but also highlights the vibrant contemporary art scene emerging from Morocco, inviting a global audience to engage with its unique artistic voice.
