Riots in Sweden continue: School and cars set on fireÂ
So far, 26 people have been arrested: 18 in Linköping and eight in Norrköping, the police wrote in a press release on Monday morning.
The riots started at 11 PM on Sunday, when a lot of people gathered in Ramels väg in the Malmö district, and several fires were started. Police moved out with several patrols to try to disperse the angry crowd.
The police told the newspaper Sydsvenskan, that about a hundred people gathered, mainly young people. They threw stones at the patrols. The police responded by using tear gas, police say.
“Several people have set fire to car tires, rubbish bins, and other things,” spokesman Patric Fors in the Police Region South told the news agency TT.
School fire
Just after midnight, a school was also set on fire. Police say they secured the area so firefighters could intervene.
“There was a fairly large fire at Rosengårdsskolan, and we had to escort the fire brigade so that they could put out the fire. It is unclear how much of the school has been destroyed,” Fors stated at 3:30 AM.
The situation calmed down during the night, but minor fires were reported elsewhere in Rosengård.
The fire service has not been able to respond to all the fires because it was not safe—some fires in cars and containers were thus not extinguished.
No one injured
There have been no reports of injured people in the riots, which the police describe as violent.
“As far as I know, no one has been injured, neither the police nor stone-throwing youth. Later Monday, we will have a clearer picture of how many people have been arrested and brought in by the police,” Fors said.
Several patrols remained in the area through the night in case new riots flared up. Read More…
